I’m excited to announce the arrival of my first finished novel! Four years of plotting, writing, and character building has lead to this moment. I can’t believe it! For a lot of people however, it may seem like a dream to write and publish a novel. An impossibility even. But I’m here to show you exactly how I wrote and published my first novel. Where to Start
To write and publish a novel, or any book for that matter, it’s important to know where to start. Many people say you need to have a solid beginning. Others swear by having a complete and finished character. However, to me, the starting point of your novel is a lot easier to find.
When you think of your story idea, whats the first thing you think of? Is it your character? Maybe a simple plot? Or even a single scene? Wherever your mind goes to first in your story, start there. Your story and writing will only feel natural if you let your ideas flow naturally. So think of the strongest idea in your mind, then run with it. Your story will build itself over time and your characters will begin to inhabit and live in this new world you have created.
Breaking Your Story in
Breaking your story in is a critical part of your idea becoming a novel. Now what exactly is breaking your idea in you may ask. Well, simply put, editing, adjusting, and experimenting.
Editing your story, allows readers to fall into your newly created world without being brought back to real life by an odd sentence or spelling mistake. Adjusting your story is simply moving a few ideas or plot points around for the overall flow of your idea. Basically, what you need to do to break in your story, is make sure people are able to put themselves in your world. Whether they put themselves in the hero’s shoes, or they feel they are simply in the same room with your main character. Help the readers to feel comfortable in your world.
Getting Published
Now that you’ve written your personal masterpiece, how will you get it published? That is where I have a secret weapon. Unlike traditional publishing agencies that take time to contact, and can be a hassle to work with, I have self published my book with an amazing site called blurb.
I absolutely love blurb! Their site is easy to follow, you can create amazing books, and newbie publishers are welcome! My aunt used this for her book, then surprised me by using blurb to publish my first book, and now I have used it for my very first novel.

Very informative, what an easy way to get started as a new writer. Looking forward to your next next blog.
Good job kid!!
Have you compared self-publishing on blurb to Amazon? I’d love to know the differences between the two.
I haven’t done much research to compare the two. However, I highly recommend Reedsy.com. They have so many great resources for writers including free email courses.
This is so inspiring! Thank you for putting this out there. I don’t have an extensive writing background, but I still enjoy reading like crazy! And it always makes me want to pursue writing a novel one of these days.
If you want to try writing, go for it! It is one of the most satisfying things you can do, especially because it’s 100% you. I’m so glad you enjoy this post!
