Wood burning. I’ve been wanting to try it, I’ve been dying to practice, and then my parents came home with a little surprise for me! Of course I had to try it as soon as possible! The real question is though, was it a success?

How I Got Started With Wood Burning
My parents took a little shopping trip and brought a few things back with them. Including a beginners wood burning set! My mom snuck it onto my room and I was so excited I could hardly speak. Quickly I ripped open the packaging and began rifling through the instructions which, I have to say, we’re really helpful.
This kit was from Sam’s Club, I’m not affiliated with them, but I absolutely loved this bundle! Click here to see the exact kit. Included, were stencils, wooden plaques, a little stand, and of course the wood burning tool itself along with some assorted brushes and paint. Not to mention carbon paper which I had never heard of before, but made a huge difference!
The Steps I Followed
The instructions in my wood burning kit were beyond helpful. First, the set up is extremely important. Three things you’ll need to supply yourself are a metal dish, pliers, and tape. These are for switching out wood burning tips, setting them aside to cool, and taping down the stand and stencils. Next was picking a wooden plaque, taping an outlined picture down, and placing the carbon paper underneath. Tracing the outline of the picture on the carbon paper transfers the pressured spots onto the wood so you have a pattern to follow when burning.
Once that was complete, it was time to get into it. This however, took much longer than I thought it would. Four hours longer to be exact. Eventually, I figured out which tips were my favorite and quickly got the hang of how to control the burning tool. Then, I had a finished wood burned picture!
What I Would Do Different In Wood Burning
I’m so glad I was able to try this project not only because I can now work on new skills, but also, I now know what to do differently. For example, I would definitely set aside more time so that I wasn’t trying to rush through any details.
The biggest thing I learned though, was to be careful when swapping your burning tips. I went to insert a new tip and for some reason it seemed a little stiff. I didn’t think anything of it and continued going. When the project was done however, I couldn’t get the tip out no matter how hard I tried. I eventually twisted it out by force and stripped the threads. Now, if I put it in again, it never tightens, it just keeps spinning. At least it wasn’t one of my favorite tips right?
The Finished Product!
Do you think this project was a success? I know I’d certainly love to keep at it, and I hope I might have inspired you to try it. I had way more fun than I expected to, and I learned one of my other skills can be used here. That skill would be drawing! Now I don’t mean, drawing the outline on the wood is easier with a drawing skill, I mean actually using the wood burning tool is so much easier if you have any experience with drawing. Let’s hear it for transferable skills!
