#16
Carefully, I tried recreating the kidnapping at the street corner. I could imagine a black car screeching to a halt with burly men piling out of it. They dodged around the tree and sign post to grab Cassy. She screamed and wriggled in their grasp as her mom desperately clung to her denim jacket, only for it to rip. Thus losing her only grip on her daughter.
Crouching on the sidewalk, I pretended to hold onto Cassy. Then, falling onto the sidewalk, I laid facing the sky, hoping for some miraculous realization.

The Cheng’s At The Scene Of The Kidnapping
“What are you doing?” Beck asked judgingly.
I rolled my head over and answered, “I’m trying to recreate the kidnapping.”
“Ah,” he replied sarcastically as he wandered to the tree on the side of the road.
“What are you doing?” I threw back. “I thought it wasn’t worth risking your life for some ‘girl’.”
He gave me a side eye.
“Well, I wasn’t about to let you go on this impossible mission alone.”
I smiled at him, and turned towards the Cheng’s restaurant. Then, it hit me.
“The Cheng’s!” I cried as I jump up and ran across the street.
“Where are you going now?!” Beck called helplessly as he followed.
Without saying a word, I burst into the restaurant and rushed to the cash register.
After impatiently ringing the service bell for what seemed like forever, Mrs. Cheng finally came to the desk.
“Oh, Comet! You’re back again, and you have a friend,” she commented in perfect English almost disheartened.
“Oh, um, we’re not here for any food today,” I assured.
She seemed to relax a bit after that.
“My neighbor’s daughter was actually kidnapped right across the street from here.”
“Oh? And, you think I might be able to help?”
“Well, more specifically your cameras.”
“Of course! Yes! Come right this way,” she urged as she led us through the tables.
“So that’s why you got so excited,” Beck quietly commented.
I nodded, and Mrs. Cheng brought us into the back office.
The Kidnapping Itself
This room wasn’t exactly big, but all of the papers stacked on the desks and file cabinets could’ve filled my entire apartment. It’s beyond me how she managed to weasel through the room in her traditional Chinese dress, but somehow, she was able to get to a desk.
Beck and I tried our best not to step on anything, but Steve had no problem jumping on every piece of paper that moved in his breeze.
“Steve!” I tried as he jumped around the room chasing the flying pieces of paper.
I grabbed a bill that was hanging from his mouth but completely lost that game of tug of war.
“Oh, don’t worry about it. My husband’s “organization” skills aren’t any worse,” she added sarcastically.
After a few minutes she called us over to the screen that displayed the two front cameras. It happened just as Janet described it.
Four men dressed in all black jumped out of the midnight sedan. Janet held onto Cassy for dear life and then she was taken.
“Wait a minute, can you go back a few seconds?” Beck asked.
A New Lead
Mrs. Cheng rewound the footage.
“There!” He said pointing to the driver side window of the car.
Mrs. Cheng paused the video and carefully looked with us.
The driver side window was rolled down and the man didn’t have his mask on. He even seemed like he was looking at the restaurant.
“Brown hair, Asian, doesn’t look like he’s part of any big organization,” Beck analyzed.
I glared at him in surprise.
“What? I’ve picked up a few things,” he justified.
I chuckled and looked back at Mrs. Cheng who seemed really focused on the man.
“Mrs. Cheng?” I asked.
She blinked and shook her head, “I just can’t believe something like that could happen right outside my restaurant. Does, does anyone else know about this?”
“Not that I know of. Why?” I replied.
“I feel bad for the little girl and her mother, but this could also be bad for business.”
“Oh, right. I promise I won’t say anything,” I assured her.
She nodded, then showed us out asking us to keep her informed on the situation.
“Well, what now?” Beck asked.
“I suppose the only thing left is to try to find that Manwell person.”
“Maybe we should go to Janet’s office and see if we can find anything?” Beck suggested.
“Yeah. Let’s try that,” I agreed.
As we started walking though, Steve started whimpering.
