“The Endura Experiment”
Start Date: 11-24-33
End Date: 11-25-33
The Endura Experiment was the first and last of it’s kind. An experiment meant to change our understanding of DNA as we know it. The experiment was based on the simple idea of creating an enduring lifeform capable of withstanding all this world could throw at it. However, scientists shut down the project after only 24 hours with one explanation.
“Our science was perfect, but our preparation was non existent.”
These words did nothing to explain the loss of their germ cell, or the scientists disappearance after this statement. However, this would be the last of the Coax Laboratories experiments after severe budget cuts and suspicious activity. Their legacy vanished soon after their demise.

“THAT’S IT!” The woman cried as she pounded her fists on the tapped up keyboard.
The screen fluttered then crackled, and finally went black. Stepping backwards over the battered metal floor, the woman clasped her dark hair in her fingers.
Behind her, a man was gathering every table, chair, and scientific machine, promptly piling them in front of the only door in the room. As he did so, a horrendous growling came booming from the other side. The door latch barely held, and he laid over the last table he placed as he looked back at the woman.
“Miranda!” He called. “We have to get out of here. This, this thing is going to kill us if we don’t do something!”
“I don’t care,” she replied numbly.
“What?”
“I DON’T CARE!” She shouted as she spun around. “Our lives have been a complete lie! Those scientists in the video, didn’t you recognize them!?”
“I was a little busy,” he jabbed as he bounced forward from the wiggling door.
“Aaron, those were our moms. Or at least, the women we thought were our moms.”
Aaron stared at her as the blood drained from his face.
“But, those scientists went missing,” he argued.
“Missing right to Canada,” Miranda added.
Stepping closer she continued, “Don’t you see, we’re the missing experiment. The germ cell. That’s the only explanation.”
“You think we came from a germ cell?” He jeered still holding the door.
“Look, all I know is what my dad told me. He said we were gifts of modern science, and that we were more closely connected than we thought. What if they managed to succeed? What if they created an unkillable human, or even two? Then decided to raise them as their own.”
Aaron stared at the ground unable to meet her eyes.
“I know this wasn’t what we were expecting to find at the Coax Lab, but it explains why there’s so many missing pieces of our lives. Why we’ve never been to the hospital, or even why we don’t really remember our childhoods. I just want answers, and if this is what I get then I’ll take it.”
Aaron finally raised his eyes to meet hers, and replied, “I didn’t know how to tell you.”
Miranda froze as her eyes widened.
“I don’t know why your dad said what he did, but it made me curious. So, I looked for my mom’s log book. you know, the one she always kept tucked away? Well…… We are the germ cell. Apparently, they were using the Endura Experiment to make us into weapons for the pending war.”
Miranda’s eyes began welling with tears as she asked, “Why didn’t you say anything? Why didn’t you tell me about the Endura Experiment!?”
“Because I didn’t want to hurt you! I knew how I felt having stumbled over this, and I didn’t want the same to happen to you. That’s why I tried to keep you away from here, but when you were packing last night, I knew I couldn’t stop you. So, I thought I’d come with you instead. But I never imagined they’d still have live experiments in here. I’m sorry Miranda. I’m so sorry.”
Carefully, she looked over his messy black hair, and saw the blood dripping from his forehead. Then, she glanced at the tear in her sweat shirt he had made as he pulled her away from the unknown creature now attacking them.
Wiping away her tears, she ran to Aaron and wrapped her arms around him. With a sigh of relief, he relinquished his grip on the table, and hugged her back.
“Don’t ever lie to me again do you hear me? If I could trust anyone in the world it should be my brother,” she threatened.
“I don’t know if brother’s the right-“
She pinched the back of his arm.
“I guess that works,” he chuckled.
As the last words fell from his lips, the door burst open, sending tables, chair, and machines in every which direction.
Behind The Endura Experiment
On a random day with a wondering mind, some strange things can happen. As a joke I began texting a good friend of mine saying I was made in a lab which explained my awkwardness. As we continued texting almost as two characters, my creativity began going wild. The more obscure we got, the more I added to this story until we went our separate ways. So, in the end, the real point is, anything can be a story. It might get wild, it might get crazy, but a story that makes you smile, laugh, or feel in this chaotic world is a story worth writing.
What was your favorite part of this story? Do you agree with Aaron in not telling Miranda about the log book? What kind of experiment do you think is after them? Let me know in the comments!

Sarina, I’ve just read ‘The Endura Experiment’ ! That was great! Could you extend it into a novella?
Thank you! I might be able to extend it. I’ll have to see what I can do…..
