John’s eyes darted back and forth on the pavement like a mad man seeking out sanity.
“They must’ve figured me out. They must’ve known. Do they know who I was trying to save? Are they going to go after Mariah!?” He ended with a shout.

Seeking Out Information
Beck jumped to him and held his mouth shut.
“Do you want the gun happy people to find us!?” He asked through gritted teeth.
John shook his head under Beck’s palm.
“We need to keep calm,” Mrs. Cheng advised.
Wiggling free from Beck’s hand, John argued, “How can you say that! They just attacked us with smoke bombs! Imagine if they were guns!”
“Will you just keep quiet!” Beck threw back.
They went back and forth like that for what seemed like an eternity. After the first few sentences though, what happened finally began sinking in.
I had Cassy in my arms. She was safe. I told her she was ok. How could I let this happen? Why didn’t I do something to protect her?
I could feel the sweat dripping down my forehead as my heart began racing.
I should have fought harder to save her, I should have done something different. Anything.
Then Steve laid his head on my lap and looked up at me, almost as if he knew what I was thinking.
I wanted to give up then and there, but I just couldn’t. I knew we were Cassy’s only hope and even if we didn’t trust this John guy, he was our best chance of finding her.
“Hey!” I shouted in an attempt to shut them up.
John grabbed his short black hair as Beck looked at me with bloodshot eyes.
“Cassy is still in danger and I won’t stop until we find her,” I announced. “So, John, is Dr. Daring really in danger?”
Seeking Out A Plan
Thankfully my shaking limbs went unnoticed.
“Yes,” John answered soulfully.
I stared at Beck waiting for his rebuttal, and boy did it come.
Smacking me on the side of the head he challenged me through gritted teeth.
“Are you serious!? Did you hit your head on the way down!? The plan was to rescue Cassy, not rescue Cassy, help this idiot and save his helpless buddy!”
“We had a plan?” I jeered.
That didn’t help the mood at all.
I sighed then continued, “John is our best chance of finding Cassy, and his price for helping us is saving Mariah. Honestly, we’d be worse off if he wanted money for helping us.”
Beck’s hands tensed up like he wanted to choke me.
“The main goal is not getting killed,” he finally finished.
“Well, the main goal of life is to be a good human and in order to do that, we need to help other humans in danger,” I threw out sarcastically.
Beck closed his eyes and spun around in anger.
“So, does that mean you’ll help me?” John asked timidly.
I smiled and glanced at Beck, who was grumbling about my carelessness.
“Yes,” I said confidently.
With that we brought Mrs. Cheng to my apartment then began seeking out Bellwether gang’s hideout.
Seeking Out The Bellwether Gang
Turns out, they weren’t actually that far from me. In fact, I had passed their spot when I was on my way to a couple job interviews which was kind of unnerving.
The sign on the front of the little building said Reeger’s Rugs but judging by the fact that I’d never heard of that company before, I think it was pretty safe to assume that was a cover name.
John ushered us to the back through a small opening between the rug shop and a sketchy looking bakery. When we finally made it to the rear entrance, John walked to the door, then paused.
“Do… do you promise to save Mariah if I help you save the little girl?” He asked quietly.
“Yes, we promise,” I answered for the both of us as Beck was still pretty mad about the whole situation.
John smiled, then opened the door, and threw me into the room.
“I’ve got fresh meat!” John called in.
Beck lunged at him, but before he could strangle him, we were surrounded by men with some really massive guns. I mean what were they trying to prove with those mini bazookas?
Anyways, Beck stopped dead in his tracks as I froze on the concrete floor of the dark room.
“Get them all inside,” a gruff voice called from beyond the darkness.
Beck and John were then pushed into the room as I was brought to my feet by one of the other men.
The Bellwether Gang’s Leader
“So, you lost Casandra but you caught these two?” The ominous voice asked.
“Yes,” John replied, “After I tried to tell the others about my plan but my radio was damaged in the process. I was still able to lure these two here promising I would help them save the girl though.”
As he finished he threw a busted watch into the darkness, and a hand snatched it out of the air.
There was a pause as I squinted, seeking out the body of the voice. Then, the man finally came out of the shadows.
His dark eyes focused on me as he ran his hand over his greased black hair. The imposing figure came closer, then he finally stopped with a victorious chuckle.
“So, you want the girl?” He asked.
I was going to answered him, but Beck kicked me before I could get anything out.
“Oh no, please, I’d like to hear his response,” the man told Beck.
I looked at him, then at the man, then at him, then at the man.
Finally, I asked, “What answer won’t get us killed?”
The man smiled, then burst out in a gruesome laugh that reflected years of smoking. It was at that moment I was glad I had never touched the things.
He finally caught his breath then, holding his stomach, he continued, “It’s been a while since we’ve had someone here so entertaining. I might even let you live a little longer because of it.”
He pulled away from me, then began walking around the spotlighted area of the room.
With his hands folded behind his back he added, “As for the girl you’ve been seeking out, well you see times are tough for the Bellwether gang and this, simple job has quite a nice payout. So, I’m afraid you won’t be seeing her again.”
Then, he snapped his fingers and whispered something to the man that answered the summons.
