Life is so crazy at this point, it seems there is no organization to anything. How do you balance school, work, or home life? Let’s not forget that we need to sleep too. So is there anyway to find balance in the chaos? I asked my dad this question and he gave me an answer I wasn’t expecting. He gave me the rule of three.

What is the Rule of Three?
Simply put, the rule of three is simple math. You have 24 hours in a day, but a healthy amount of sleep is 8 hours. So, 24 divided by 8 is 3. So that means you get 8 hours of sleep, 8 hours of work, then 8 hours to yourself to do chores, hobbies, and socialize.
Dividing 24 hours by 8 allows me to have a balanced view of life, and it helps me to know exactly where my time is going. I hate having a boat load of things to do, yet no idea how I’ll get it all done without severe sleep deprivation. This rule is a major help in my adulting journey!
How do You use the Rule of Three?
I love how simple this rule of three is to use! One of the most important things about using this rule however, is to be completely honest about how much time you spend and want to spend on certain activities. For example, 8 hours for sleep is almost a given, but how much time do you spend working? How much time of your 8 hours personal time do you want to use for projects and people?
First you’ll need to figure out how much time the essential that is work takes up. Usually this should fit in to the allotted 8 hours plus or minus an hour or two for commuting. Then other obligations and essentials such as chores or house work should be accounted for in the other 8 hours. Finally, whatever time is left over after all of the essential time is accounted for, then the rest of the time is yours to use however you want. Such as sports, learning something new, or of course, hobbies.
How I am using the Rule of Three
I started using the rule of three about a month ago, and I feel like I’ve found a true “life” hack. I’ve implemented this into my life by simply remembering exactly how long 8 hours is. For example, 8 hours is going to bed at 11pm and waking up at 7am. I also remember that 7am to 3pm is another 8 and so on and so forth.
By remembering the hours that symbolize each 8 hour increment, I can manage my time much better. Now I truly understand where the time has gone and how to best use it.
That’s it!

Sarina, this was an excellent read! While you may not have a tremendous amount of life experience behind you, you are wise beyond your tender years. What do I mean? Well, here you had a conundrum, and instead of plowing through it willynilly, you went to a trusted older person, your dad, and asked for his advice. You then took that advice and applied it in your own life. Too many young people don’t want the advice from older people but if they only stopped to realize it might just save them some grief down the path of life. Oh well, some people only seem to learn the hard way. I wish you well in your endeavors. All my love for you. 🥰
