#12
Steve and I hopped into the rickety elevator and began sinking to the next floor.
It was then I realized the elevator I blocked with the pipe was the next one over, and that this one was holding us by one weak cable.
“Well, at least they won’t hear us?” I suggested.
Steve paid no mind as he stared at the moving things outside.
By the time we reached ground level, the sun had almost set, and a few of the other men had returned from the wild goose chase I sent them on.

Not My College Roommate
“Where is he!?” The biggest one demanded. “The least we could’ve done was catch that mutt!”
The hair on Steve’s back stood up straight, but I brushed it down and ran behind the elevator.
“This is your chance to redeem yourself,” I heard a voice scold. “Find that man, and finish the job.”
I turned to see a straight-laced man with cold eyes shoving a gun into Beck’s hands.
“Don’t disappoint us this time,” he finished before stomping away.
Beck looked down at the gun, nearly shaking as his eyes turned glossy.
“Now’s my chance,” I thought before running to him.
I grabbed his hand and raced back to the alley I had come out of.
“Comet! What are you doing!?” Beck cried.
“I’m saving you! You’ve clearly been taken captive by them; I couldn’t just leave you!” I shouted back.
Beck pulled his hand free from my death grip and staired at me with a pained look.
“What are you doing?!” I asked.
“You should’ve escaped when you had the chance,” he answered before he shouted, “He’s over here!”
The loud footed men began running for the alley, and with a tightening grip, Beck lifted the gun.
Nearly falling over, I ran as fast as my feet would take me. My heart was pounding in my chest and my head throbbed.
“How could I have miss-read the situation that badly!?” I mentally kicked myself.
Steve whined and kept glancing back, but kept at my side as best he could.
“Ok ok, where are we?” I asked Steve.
He barked and turned down another alley. Assuming he remembered how we came in, I followed him. Soon though, we were right back at the decrepit skyscraper.
Reasoning With The College Roommate
“Steve!” I scolded.
He barked and looked across the lot.
There stood my old college roommate, staring at me in shock.
“Come on!” I called to Steve as I hopped into another elevator.
He reluctantly followed, and I slammed my fist into the top floor button. At least there I knew I had a tool box and some cable to work with.
Beck saw us and quickly ran to the next elevator. Following closed behind us as we ascended.
I slowly looked up and saw Beck, trying to steady his gun holding hand.
Finally reaching the top, I ran to the edge of the building, and looked back to try and find the cable in the fading daylight.
“Comet.” A half-familiar voice called.
That’s It!
