Indoor Garden Vs. Outdoor
So, what really are the differences between an indoor and outdoor garden? Well one is outside and the other is inside…. actually, its a little more than that. The first question you might ask is what types of plants will thrive in each location? Another question is why would you have either garden? What are the benefits of each?
When I think of outdoor gardens, I think of lettuce, cucumbers, and strawberries. Outdoor gardens are as practical as they are beautiful. Their produce makes the battles between you, the weather, and bugs worth it. When I think of an indoor garden however, it’s easier to picture vining plants like ivy, Small plants like succulents, or or even flowering plants like orchids. Granted, depending on where you live, all of these could also grow outside. But when you welcome these plants into your home, they provide the benefits of cleaner air, and a calmness of mind. Not to mention they brighten your home, and can be great conversation pieces.
Deciding What Type Of Garden To Start
With all of the benefits that come with gardening, it’s no wonder more and more people are trying it! Cleaner air, free food, peace of mind?? Sign me up! But where should you start? Would an indoor garden be better to start with? Or should you keep the dirt and green stuff outside?
Here are some questions to help you determine which type of garden to have.
- How much space do you have inside, and outside?
- Do you have pets that might eat your indoor garden?
- Do you want to brighten a room, liven up your yard, or both?
- What does your budget allow you to spend?
Asking yourself these questions before you start your garden will help you to not get overwhelmed. When you have a clear idea in your mind, you’ll be able to follow it, and follow through with your plans.
My Indoor Garden
Previously, I talked about my outdoor garden in this post. But I have an indoor garden as well! No one ever said you couldn’t have both! Each garden is special to me in a different way, but this is about my indoor garden. My indoor garden is made up of a collection of plants that I’ve propagated, collected, saved, or that I had been given.
Each plant needs a specific amount of light, and a specific amount of water. So having multiple different plants can be a bit of a juggle. If you love green though, this is the best décor. As my mom always says I live in a jungle, but collecting plants is so addicting! So if you do start an indoor garden, don’t limit yourself to what you think might do well. It’s always good to do research before you buy a new plant, but keep an open mind about what your home has to offer as far as space and light. And keep in mind how much water each plant will need.
That’s It!
In conclusion, indoor or outdoor, start gardening! It can be a bit frustrating at first, and the bugs will come. But gardening is a fun as it is rewarding. You pick your own plants, you harvest some of them, and you tend to them to keep them happy. Which in turn gives you the satisfaction of keeping a living thing alive!
