#15
“Who’s that?” Beck asked from behind the counter.
“That’s my neighbor,” I said, completely confused.
Janet’s blue suit was covered in dirt and little holes. Only a few strands of her hair were still clinging to the clip in the back as she ran to the door.
“Comet! Comet!” She called as she vigorously knocked on the door.
I slid it open and she practically fell apart.
“She’s gone, Comet! I lost my baby girl! I lost Cassy!” She sobbed as she held onto my shoulder.

What Happened To The Lost Cassy?
She shook in my arms as she completely bawled her eyes out.
“What?! What happened?!” I asked in a panic as Steve jumped around barking.
“We were on the corner of Hasting and Williams, walking home from kindergarten, and these men with black masks just ran up and grabbed her! I tried holding on, but they pushed me to the ground and I pulled Cassy’s jacket off.”
She took a sniffling breath and finished, “Before they left, a man looked at me and said ‘Courtesy of Manwell’.” What am I going to do?!”
With that she collapsed to the ground soaking the little denim jacket in her tears.
I knelt down to her, and held her shoulders as I tried to calm her down. Then, I made a decision.
“We’ll find her. I promise.”
She looked at me through her bloodshot eyes and scolded, “You can’t promise things like that. What if she’s already dead?”
She had a point. That was a definite possibility, but it just didn’t sound right.
“Why would they have kidnapped her if they wee just going to kill her? Wouldn’t they have just shot her then and there?” I suggested.
Janet looked at me in terror.
“I’m sorry,” I attempted. “I’m just trying to think about this logically.”
She sniffled, then agreed with me.
Pulling her off the floor, I continued, “You two will be together again. Steve and I will make sure of it. In the meantime, maybe you should go back home and see if they call for a ransom or anything.”
She gave me a side eye and replied, “You’ve been watching those cop shows again, haven’t you?”
I gave a faint smile and so did she.
Looking down at Steve, she called him to her, and gave him the ripped jacket.
“You remember her right?” She asked him as he happily sniffed the denim. “Find her for me, ok?”
Janet then patted his head and tied the jacket around his neck.
“Thank you,” she said as she walked through the door. “Thank you, Comet.”
“It’s the least I can do,” I answered before closing the door behind her.
On The Trail Of The Lost Cassy
Beck finally popped his head out from behind the counter and began, “So, what are you going to do?”
I knelt down and scratched Steve’s head as I thought. In a strange way, I kind of wanted to ask Steve his opinion, but one look into those big black eyes told me everything I needed to know.
“I’m going after her,” I said as I ran to my bedroom.
“What!? Comet, you can’t be serious!”
“I’ve never been more serious in my life!” I shouted from the bedroom as I searched for my old pocket knife.
“Where are you even going to start!? And what are you going to do if you find them!?”
I ran from the room and grabbed some office supplies out of the dish on the counter.
“What happened to looking for jobs!? What happened to laying low!? Comet! For once in your life be reasonable!”
“I can’t just ignore this!” I finally snapped. “Her mom helped me get this apartment. She helped me get on my feet when I had no one else!”
My voice cracked but I held it together and continued, “I’ve helped Janet with Cassy for years. She’s a public defender so when she would go to depositions and work late nights, I’d take care of Cassy for her. By this point, she’s practically my niece! They never abandon me, and I refuse to abandon her.”
“We nearly died yesterday; I’m not going to run right back into danger for some little girl!”
“Some little girl?!” I echoed. “Her name is Cassy. She’s six years old, has blonde curly hair that bounces when she laughs and she loves Steve to the point of nearly choking him when she hugs him! She’s not some girl, and her mom isn’t just some upset parent. They’re the closest thing to family I’ve ever had! So, you can stay here if you want, but I’m going after her.”
“You can’t,” he demanded as he grabbed my arm.
“Why not?!”
“You saved me, Comet! Do you really think I’m going to let you throw your life away taking on an impossible battle!? I owe it to you to protect you. Even if I have to protect you from yourself.”
“Let go of me,” I said as I jerked away. “If I can’t help others, then what’s the point of all this? What’s the point of being here at all?”
Beck had no reply.
“I’m going to help her. You can come with me, or you and stay here. The choice is yours.”
With that, I ran through the courtyard towards the spot where it happened. The spot where Cassy was taken.
That’s It!
