#11
I really wish I would have walked away. I really wish I could have just kept walking down that alleyway. But what did I do? I turned around, and called out to Beck. The body builders standing around him glared back at me with a terrifying mix of power, and pure hatred before lunging towards me.
Steve jumped in front of my frozen body, and rammed into the first brute, pushing him to the ground.
I finally unstuck my feet from the cement and called out to him, “Steve! Come on!”
He flipped around and pounced off the man at my call. We then raced down the way we had come, only this time, we were being followed by a few, less than friendly, people.

Running From A New Enemy
With Steve close at my heels, I darted down a cramped path. I guess I figured the cool breeze coming from it might mean another way to a main road, but I found out pretty quickly I was wrong.
The path lead to a half-demolished skyscraper, or was it half finished? I really couldn’t tell considering I had more pressing issues to worry about.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a cockeyed ladder leaning against some scaffolding and thrust myself to its last rung.
Steve looked up at me and barked nervously as he watched my quick getaway. By the time I finally realized he couldn’t follow me, the men had already found the building.
“Steve!” I cried, “Follow me!” With a wave I jumped off the scaffolding into the building.
From the cracks in the floor boards, I could see Steve chasing after me from below.
“Now I just needed to find some way of getting him up with me and away from our new enemy. Or, maybe I should go down to him?” These thoughts raced through my head as I dodged support beams and leapt over extra boards.
“He’s in the building!” One of the men shouted.
What The New Enemy Discovers
My heart skipped a beat at their discovery, and it nearly stopped as I looked to the ground, and realized Steve was gone.
“Maybe he found a way up,” I thought to myself in a panic.
Frantically, I ran to the other side of the building staring at the ground beneath me. Honestly, I shouldn’t have been surprised when I smacked straight into a support beam. Boy did that give me a head ache.
I bounced off the pillar and landed flat on my butt as the room spun round. Before I lost all my senses though, Steve came running towards me.
Nearly sliding into me, he panted and licked my face with a mad excitement.
“Steve? Where’d you come from?” I asked.
I looked around him, but all I could see was another ladder like the one before.
“Did he climb that himself?” I thought.
“Up there!” One of the men called.
“We gotta go,” I mumbled to Steve as I pushed myself to my feet.
He leaned against my side, and I balanced myself with a hand on his back as we ran to the center of the building.
A New Enemy In The Building
Closer to the middle, rough concrete walls began forming, and an old cage suspended from cables came into view.
“In there!” I told Steve.
He seemed to understand what I was saying, because he ran faster, and hopped right into the crude elevator.
I pressed the button for the top floor, and sat tight with Steve on the floor as it wobbled to the top of the building.
Once at the top, I found a piece of pipe and wedged it between the elevator and the floor we were on.
“At least now we’ll have so time to think,” I explained to Steve.
He hung his tongue out as he plopped down on the floor. As he caught his breath, I leaned over the edge of the building, and could see more men gather at ground level.
Glancing back, I found an old tool chest, some cables, a bottle half full of mystery liquid, and a walkie talkie. I picked up the bottle, and studied the lime green fluid as Steve cocked his head in confusion.
I looked back down, then chucked the bottle into a dumpster stationed right outside the border fence to the lot.
The men jumped back, and a few called out, “He must’ve jumped!” before they ran out of the lot.
“Huh, thank goodness they’re all muscle and no brains.” I quipped.
Steve gave a little arf, and laid his head on the floor.
Grabbing the walkie talkie I sat by Steve and fiddled with the dial. Now, I knew it was a complete long shot that I’d find the frequency, but I thought I’d at least try to find their station. Maybe that would be our way out of this.
So, as I nursed my head ache, I spun the dial. And spun it. And spun it. Still, nothing.
I sighed and looked down at Steve who had wiggled his head onto my lap.
Rubbing his ears, I said, “What happened to him? We were best friends in college. How could he have gotten mixed up with these people?”
Then, it hit me.
“He’s their prisoner!” I exclaimed, startling Steve. “We have to rescue him!”
I jumped to my feet and, taking one more glance down the side of the building, I saw the remaining men had gathered by an opening in the fence.
“Ok Steve. Follow me.” I instructed.
