#21
It felt like we were wearing tap shoes as we snuck down the bright hallway. Cassy clung to my arm and Beck led us to the door. Sadly though, an escape like this is always full of the unexpected twists and turns.
“Stop right there!” A man ordered from behind.
My heart stopped as I twisted around. The man was holding a gun at us, with an all too familiar scowl on his face.

The Unexpected Fight
“I’ve got you now,” he sneered.
I really lost it at this point.
“Do you have any idea what we’ve gone through in the last two days?!” I shouted. “All we want to do is bring a little girl back to her mother. Can’t you understand that??”
The man lowered his gun, but I think it was only to project his sarcasm better.
“Look, this is my job. It’s nothing against you, nothing particularly against that girl. I was just told to make sure the gang’s plans all work out,” he finished with a shrug.
“How do you even get sucked into this line of work?” I asked. “I mean you could have been a mechanic, or a baker, you could have been a stay at home dad, but yet you chose this. Were you not hugged enough as a child or what!?”
“Comet!” Beck growled. “Are you trying to get us killed??”
The man started laughing and answered, “You know I think he is, and being such an obliging fellow, I think I’ll help him out.”
With that the man aimed at me, but before we got a chance to do anything, Steve burst through a tiny window near the celling landing square on top of the man. Beck ran to him and pulled the gun away, but the man was out cold on the floor.
The Unexpected Helper
“Steve!” I cried. “Where’d you come from you crazy pup?”
He wagged his tail and licked my face, acting like he hadn’t seen me in years.
“Comet? Is that you down there?” A voice asked from the open window.
Beck and I looked out and saw John leaning in.
“I found Steve out here panicking. He must’ve smelled you or something.”
“I swear this is the best pup in the world,” I said as I scratched Steve’s ears.
“Well that’s great but we have another problem,” John informed. “It looks like someone found the door I left unlocked for you. There’s a bunch of people waiting for you there.”
“Oh great,” Beck complained as he ran his hand through his hair.
“What if we go out through the window?” Cassy asked.
“You really think We could all fit through that?” Beck jeered.
I paused for a minute, then answered, “Maybe not us, but Cassy could.”
Beck glared at me as I continued, “Our whole goal here was to rescue Cassy, so, lets get her out of here and then we only have to worry about the two of us getting out.”
As I finished talking, we started to hear footsteps echoing through the hallway.
“Alright fine,” Beck finally caved.
Grabbing Cassy, he handed her up to John, and he pulled her through the window.
“Ok now the dog,” Beck instructed.
As he tried to grab Steve though, he back up behind me and growled at Beck’s hands.
“Oh you’ve gotta be kidding me,” Beck finally said, completely exasperated.
The steps started getting louder behind me.
“We’ll take him with us,” I added. “John, get Cassy to her mom. Please.”
John nodded, then grabbed Cassy and started running away from the building.
“Come on!” Beck called as he ran down the hall.
I followed right behind him with Steve as we frantically searched for a door, an opening, even a bigger window, but there was nothing.
The Beginnings Of The Unexpected Trip
Completely out of breath, the three of us stopped, and I asked Beck, “If…If they do catch us, what do think they’ll do? I mean, if they knew who we were, wouldn’t they have told your old gang by now?”
“Maybe,” Beck answered through his gasps for air. “The next possible option is that they’ll sell us.”
I looked at him, completely horrified.
“Well, you asked.”
Yeah I did. Then before we could talk anymore, our mumbling enemies grew closer, and we started running.
Through corridors and winding halls, we finally found ourselves in what seemed like a mini warehouse. The room was full of trucks, and workers. With crates being stacked to the ceiling, Beck and I figured that would be our best hiding spot. So, Beck, Steve and I jumped into one of the wooden crates and slid the cover over the top.
We could hear the guards running through the room, interrogating the workers as they went.
“No sign of them! Onto the next room!” One shouted.
Beck nudged my arm and said, “Give it ten minutes, then we’ll double back and find another way out.”
That, in theory, was a great plan. If only the workers hadn’t screwed the lid to our crate shut.
As we held our breath, the three of us were hauled to a truck, and driven out of the warehouse.
“Well, this plan is going great,” Beck grumbled.
“Hey at least were not dead or being sold right?” I argued.
“True, but we have no idea where were going, we have no food, no water, and last I checked The Bellwether gang still had our phones.”
I knew he was right. I knew this was getting dangerously close to a worst case scenario, but I couldn’t give in to that nagging voice that said we were done for. So I parked myself in a corner of the crate and sat feeling every little bump until we reached the airport at the beginning of the unexpected trip.
