#18
“D-Don’t shoot. Please,” John begged with his bony hands in the air.
Beck stood cautiously, not once taking his eyes off the new discovery, of the man who had kidnapped Cassy.
“Give me one good reason not to,” he replied coldly.
“I’ll give you one,” I retorted. “There’s a kid here!?”
I motioned to Cassy who was staring at him wide eyed.
She then turned to me and cried, “Comet!”

Beck Pushing Towards A New Discovery
Realizing she was still tied to the chair, I went to the ropes and began untying her.
From all her wiggling she had just about broken the skin around her wrists so I tried to be as careful as possible while I undid the knots.
When I was done, Cassy jumped off the chair and ran to me in tears.
“Comet!” She sobbed as Steve jumped around us,
I squeezed her in my arms then drew her forward.
Looking into her bloodshot eyes I said, “It’s ok Cassy. You’re safe now.”
She sniffled, then Steve pressed his floppy tongue on her cheek in a wet kiss.
She giggled, then threw her arms around Steve exclaiming, “I knew you’d find me!”
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a pup so happy to be hugged. I honestly thought his tail might just fly off from happiness.
“Sure, give the dog all the credit,” Beck complained.
By this point, Beck had cornered both John and Mrs. Cheng with the gun.
“Please you don’t understand,” Mrs. Cheng pleaded. “We’ve run into some hard times recently and my son, he…he just wanted to help.”
“Oh how cute,” Beck answered sarcastically. “He’s not five anymore! You do realize he kidnapped a child right!?”
“Getting a little passionate?” I jeered.
He rolled his eyes and sighed before instructing, “Take that rope and let’s tie these two up. We can leave an anonymous call and the police can deal with them.”
I couldn’t believe how involved he had gotten. When we found out she was gone, he fought to stay home and invisible, but now somehow he’s ended up running the show.
Before I could poke at Beck anymore though, John shouted, “Please! You can’t take her!”
He stepped forwards, and Beck instinctively aimed the gun straight at his chest.
The Ultimate New Discovery
“Look, my mom’s just trying to cover for me,” John began with a wobbly voice. “This was never about the money. There’s…there’s a friend of mine, and he went missing. No one seemed to care, so I went to find him myself.”
“What does that have to do with you kidnapping an innocent kid?” Beck objected.
“I found evidence that his disappearance was linked to the Bellwether gang. So, I went undercover to try and save him. For a while I stayed under the radar as a janitor, but they were a bit short handed for this job and offered a position to me. Then they said if I refused, they’d kill me.”
John trembled more and more with every word, as if he feared this gang hearing him.
Beck glared at him, then looked at me.
“Do you believe a word of this?”
Honestly, at first it sounded like a cover. Just seeing how panicked John was though, made me wonder, if there is someone in danger. Not to mention, if he was telling the truth and we didn’t believe him, would this person really get hurt? Or maybe even killed?
I finally looked at John and asked, “What’s your friend’s name?”
“Dr. Mariah Daring,” He answered.
That name rang as clear as a bell.
“Wait, the vet?” I asked.
“You know him?” John threw back.
“Um, yeah actually. Mariah is technically a vet, but because he didn’t exactly use well known treatments on his patients, no one went to him. He mentioned that when I met him a few months ago. We were in competition for the same job.”
“That’s him,” John confirmed. “He’s been missing for nearly a month now but I think I might have figured out where he is. If I could just keep the girl a little longer, maybe…”
The Sudden Fight
“You seriously think we’d let you keep her!?” I argued.
“Just to save Mariah! I promise she won’t get hurt.”
Beck finally interjected, “You couldn’t defend yourself against a dog and two societal rejects! How do you think you can defend yourself against an entire gang?”
Before John could answer, a barrage of smoke bombs came through the window forcing us all to the ground.
The room filled with the suffocating cloud as Cassy began to scream in terror. I blindly reached for her, but my hand was smacked away. Before I knew it, I got a faint glimpse of Cassy being carried down the hall by what looked like one of the men from the video.
“Cassy!” I shouted unsuccessfully.
“Comet!” Beck called back.
While I was focused on Cassy, Mrs. Cheng had opened an old garbage shoot, and dove in with John following close behind. Beck grabbed my arm and drug me through the smoke to our escape route.
Reluctantly, I climbed in, then Steve jumped in after me. We were pushed back and forth by the twists and turns of the tube like we were in a pinball machine.
Finally, we reached the end. The hard concrete end. I landed flat on my stomach then Steve crashed onto my back. Thankfully I had just rolled out of the way when Beck came sliding down and shared our painful landing.
“We haven’t used that shoot in years so we moved the dumpster,” Mrs. Cheng explained.
“Oh good to know,” Beck grumbled. “Now, could you explain why we were just attacked by a small army!?”
“Yeah, I’d kinda like to know that too,” I added as I rubbed my throbbing back.
That’s It!
