#20
Before we knew it, Beck and I had been thrown into a pitch-black room with our only light to the outside world being killed by a slamming door.
“You alright Comet?” Beck called into the darkness.
“Yeah, I’m ok,” I answered.
After waiting a few minutes for a snarky comment I finally added, “Go ahead. Say it.”
I didn’t need light to be able to see Beck annoyance.
He took a deep breath then threw, “I told you not to listen to him! I told you not to go after Cassy! Comet do you realize how bad this is!? If they find out who we are, they’ll either have us killed, or sell us to the gang that wants us dead! Seriously Comet!”

Are Cassy And Mariah Really Here?
There was a loud thud as I assumed he sat down.
Joining him on the cold floor I started, “Well, at least were not sitting back at the apartment board out of our minds, right?”
I could tell from his silence that was the last thing he wanted to hear.
“Look, I’m sorry we got caught like this, but I couldn’t leave Cassy. I…I just couldn’t.
“You’re a good person Comet,” Beck finally answered. “But It’s gonna get you killed.”
“I know.”
“And yet you still run into danger like this?” Beck sighed. “Do you have a death wish?”
As my eyes adjusted I tried to find the ground, then I replied, “No. But I refuse to do nothing when need my help. I may not have much, especially after this, but I’ll keep doing anything I can to change anyone’s life for the better.”
Beck got deathly quiet before asking, “Wait what do you mean, especially after this?”
I really didn’t want to answer him, but then I thought of a more pressing problem.
“Where’s Steve?” I asked.
There was a pause, then Beck answered, “Did he even come in the building with us?”
“I have no idea.”
Beck could probably hear my voice wobble because he added, “Well, where was the last place you saw him?”
“Maybe……Just before we went through that alleyway?”
I sat in silence remembering that sketchy looking place. Then, how Steve’s nose twitched as we moved past.
“I think he went to the bakery,” I finally said.
“Of course he did. That dog follows his nose like a person would follow a hundred dollar bill.”
As we finished our hypothesis, clattering keys began coming closer to, where I thought the door was. Footsteps were eventually heard too.
Finding The Hostages
“Comet,” Beck whispered. “Get to the back of the room.”
I ran my hands on the floor until I found a wall, then stood myself up and slid to a corner.
Finally, the jingling stopped.
Then a door opened right in front of my face. I nearly screamed in terror as I saw John standing there. Apparently, I had either gotten really turned around or this room had multiple doors.
He saw my mouth open, then grabbed my head and whispered, “Try not to get us all killed!”
“We could say the same to you!” Beck whispered angrily from behind.
“I have a plan,” he tried to explain.
Finally wiggling my face free I said, “Sure would’ve been great if you told us!”
“Shut Up and come with me,” he ordered.
Beck and I scrambled through the door following John through a narrow hallway.
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“I found Cassy and Mariah now come on,” he answered impatiently.
Finally, we got to a vent in the wall, and after climbing through the dust and spiderwebs for what seemed like an eternity, John stopped us and looked down. There was a hole in the vent that we could barely see a makeshift lab through.
Papers were scattered on desks with test tubes and beakers filled with who knows what. A single computer sat in the corner of the room, and before I could make any more observations, two men burst into the room holding Dr. Daring.
They threw him to a desk then taunted, “Maybe if you were half as good as your brother, you wouldn’t still be here.”
Like a cornered wild animal, Mariah slung the papers and test tubes onto the floor. Letting glass shatter across their feet.
“Send that message to your boss!” He answered as he angrily adjusted his glasses.
The two were silent, then left the room with a knowing glance.
Getting To Cassy And Mariah
Mariah sat down, then laid his head on the empty desk.
“Hey Mariah! Up here!” John called.
Curiously, he stood on the desk and looked into the vent.
“John!? What are you doing here!?” He cried.
“Shhhhh,” John begged. “We’re here to get you out.”
“We’re?”
John looked at me, so I answered, “I don’t know if you remember me, but we interviewed for Hoggie Haven about three months ago?”
“You!?”
I chuckled as I replied, “And a friend. By the way, you wouldn’t have happened to see a dog anywhere, would you?”
“What?” He answered completely confused.
“Not now,” John shot back. “Mariah, can you undo this vent? I have the keys to get out of your room.”
Mariah jumped down from the desk and frantically looked around.
Finally, he found a screwdriver and rushed to get us out of the vents. John climbed out and took a key off his chain. Tossing it up to us.
Saving Cassy And Mariah
“Cassy’s down the vent a little ways. She’s been crying nonstop so you should be able to hear her when you get close. Once you’ve found her, go through her door, left down the hallway, then take the first door on your right. That’s the way Mariah and I are getting out so I’ll leave it unlocked and you can escape too. Now hurry.”
I nodded, and Beck followed as we wove through the vents.
“Are you sure it’s this way?” Beck asked.
“Yeah. I’m like 95% sure.”
I could hear Beck grind his teeth as moved forwards. I regained my confidence though as a little girl’s cries for help suddenly flooded the vents.
Beck and I shimmied faster, and faster, then, I fell onto the floor. Apparently that vent wasn’t screwed shut like the other one.
“Comet!” Cassy cried as she ran to hug me.
Beck threw himself down beside me and pulled the key from my hand as I moaned in pain.
“Why?” I asked numbly.
Beck opened the door and peered out.
“No one’s there. Let’s go,” Beck instructed.
So, prying my aching back off the concrete, I hobbled to the door with Cassy hugging my side.
“Stay close and stay quite got it?” Beck ordered looking at the both of us.
Cassy gave an affirmative nod, and I gave a weak thumbs up.
With that, we started walking through the hall.
That’s It!
