I readily admit I’m not a very good cook. Call it lack of confidence or practice, but the truth is I’ve only recently learned the difference between a pot and a sauce pan. So about half way through making cupcakes, I looked at the mess around me and asked my self one simple question. “Why?”

Planning My Cupcake Escapade
The night before, I sat up panicking about my plans. I wanted to make cupcakes. Something I had never done before. So needless to say, when I woke up in the morning, I couldn’t get anything else done before my cupcakes were finished. I immediately turned to Pinterest for inspiration and help in choosing a recipe.
Now, I didn’t tell my parents I was going to make cupcakes because I wanted to see if I could do it myself. I wanted to know if I could adult long enough to make a single batch of cupcakes. So, after the cupcake recipe was found, and a buttercream frosting was chosen, I got to work.
Beginning With The Cupcakes
Simply put, I have a ton of allergies. So cupcakes are not exactly my friend. But I had specifically chosen an allergy friendly recipe and quickly got to work grabbing the ingredients. There were however, many little tricks I wasn’t aware of.
The biggest trick I wasn’t aware of, was the fact that I should make sure the sugar isn’t in clumps before I put it into the mix. As I scooped the brown goo into the pan, I realized there were a bunch of chunks in the batter. So I grabbed my spoon and gracefully attacked the clumps. Jabbing them into a million pieces in the tin. Afterwards, I put them in the oven. I think I may have put to much flour in though, considering the cupcakes ended up puffing over the top and touching their neighbors. But I wasn’t too concerned with that, considering what I did with the buttercream.
Making The Cupcake Frosting
With the cupcakes in the oven, I set my sights on the buttercream frosting. I didn’t realize the name was so self explanatory. But sadly, I needed two sticks of thawed butter, and I had one from the fridge and the other from the freezer. So I took the hard sticks of butter, and put them in hot water to try and thaw them. Surprisingly, this actually ended well. Until I tried mixing them like the recipe said. Butter flew out of the bowl onto the counter, the floor, and me. But that wasn’t the messiest part.
I was told I needed to sift the powdered sugar. Yeah… So I sifted. There was a little mess on the counter which was manageable. Then I finished sifting, and brought the sifter to the sink in the opposite part of the kitchen. I didn’t realize there was still powdered sugar in the sifter. I looked behind me, and started laughing as I saw the perfect trail of splattered powdered sugar on the floor, the rug, and the counter. After my hysterical laugher was over, I cleaned the kitchen. Which I should have waited to do until after I tired mixing the powered sugar with the butter. If I have learned anything from this experience, its that powered sugar is my enemy.
Frosting The Cupcakes
This, was the part I was looking forward to. The thing that inspired me to make cupcakes. I had watched video after video on piping techniques and frosting tips, so I was ready to try my hand at frosting. But first, I had to learn how to make the color purple. I separated the buttercream into three different dishes and tried my hand with food coloring, and ended up getting pink, purple, and I just left the last dish the same color as it was.
Giddy with excitement, I plopped the frosting into plastic bags with the tip inserted. I pushed the frosting to the end of the bag and began piping, but then, the tip popped out of the bottom of the bag. Thankfully I caught it before I ruined the cupcakes. But when It happened a second time with a different bag of frosting, I nearly lost it. But I kept calm and continued frosting. Then, a few sprinkles later, I ended up with the picture below.
That’s It!
All in all, I want to keep trying. I think the next time I’m going to make more buttercream so I can fully frost the cupcakes, and I’m going to try to adjust the cupcake recipe so they don’t spread out on me. Really though, I’m glad I made them, and now I have a bit more confidence in my baking skills considering they’re almost gone and no one’s gotten sick yet.
